Mac's News Flashes (* future)

Oct 19-20, 02* The world-famous Head of the Charles Regatta  is this weekend. Come watch the rowing and cheer us on. World-class rowers from all over the world compete in this event. Always a fun event on the Charles River.
Oct 3-4, 02 (Oct 5-6, 02)* I'm in Laguna Beach, CA, attending a Young Presidents' Organization GLFF meeting and then over to to the GLSEN conference that weekend.
Sept 28, 02 The housewarming party of my new residence, dubbed the "Sport Chalet" was a huge success. Here are those pics.
Sept 13-14, 02 I'm in Orlando, FL attending a conference by Out & Equal, here are pics.
Sept 9, 02 Rowing's Fall training season starts today. This means practice each Mon-Thur (4 days a week) mornings, we meet at 6AM at the MIT Pierce Boathouse. Practices includes intensity and steady-state erging, and practice workouts on the river.
Sept 2, 02 Happy Birthday! Mac turns 33 today ;) Yeah!
Aug 31-Sep 2, 02 White Water Rafting trip in Maine (Penobscot river, Class 4 and 5 rapids; Dead River release, Class 4 rapids) see our pics
Aug 21, 02 MIT Sloan Crew scrimmage with other local rowing clubs, pics
Aug 10, 02 Day trip to Provincetown on the fast ferry, pics.
Aug 4, 02 Raced in my first triathlon, but only did the bike and run, skipped the swim. Having just learned about the race just days before, it was pretty spur of the moment and I actually didn't make the final decision to race until 45 minutes prior to start time, after having toured the race course. It was in New London, New Hampshire. The race beings at Bucklin Beach on Little Lake Sunapee with a 0.25 mile swim. From the swim, you run up Little Sunapee Road, loop through the Twin Lake Villa golf course, get back on Little Sunapee Road and meet your bike on County Road. This 2.6 mile run has two substantial hills -- one short and steep, the other long and somewhat steep. From the run, the 5.7 mile bike heads down County Road onto the long, relatively flat Newport Road (route 11) and back onto Little Sunapee Road. You basically make a loop around the lake and end up where you started. pics here 1, pic 2
Jul 31, 02 My parents were visiting and so I took them to my Muay Thai class (kick boxing) at SitYodTong, see pics. Getting the hang of this boxing, but still coming home with bruised shins ... ouch!
Jul 13, 02 Rowed in a last minute entry in the men's 4+ boat for the Sweeps & Sculls Regatta in Providence, RI, pics. It was uncertain if we were able to get a boat or not, but the host came through at the last minute and loaned the use of their wonderfully fast (and luxurious) Vespoli lightweight. Even though we weren't able to bring our own cox, we took a chance and drove down Saturday morning, and were able to hot-seat an excellent cox once down there. In our heat, Heat 10, there were 4 boats: 1 Open and 3 Masters. Though the Open finished the 1000 meter race in 3:43, the 3 Masters boats were within 2 seconds of each other at the end. Even with a slightly rough start, the BBB team was in 2nd place (behind the Open) for a while, but the other two Master's boat edged us out in the last 100 meters. Time for the 3 Masters were: 4:08:0, 4:09:0, 4:10:5. For never having practiced, the 4, did okay and were able to keep up with the locals.
Jul 4, 02 Happy Fourth! Here are Boston fireworks pics from my 11th floor balcony, a sight and sound adventure to the Boston Pops, pic 1, 2, 3, the Boston fireworks barge is directly in front of my building so we had the only straight on birdseye view of the event.
Jun 29, 02 **CANCELLED** Will be competing in this Regatta in Berlin. Still planning out my trip but may head over to Barcelona right afterwards for a few days before heading back. Will likely head to Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, for a few days after rowing for a bit of R&R, drop me a line if you're there. **CANCELLED**
Jun 15, 02 Happy Birthday Tom, 32 yeah! Here are pics from the dinner at Pho Pasteur and an evening at Cosmic candle pin bowling and then some foosball at Gillians on Lansdown Street in Boston.
  Jun 8, 02

I rowed in the Men's Open 8+ and we came first taking home the Gold (Yeah! We were fortunate to row against and just beat out DC Strokes, Capital Rowing Club, and Alexandria Rowing Club, all great contenders and good sportsmen), as well as rowed in the Men's Masters 8+ and came in 2nd. The regatta was hosted by DC Strokes Stonewall Regatta and attended by many local and national clubs. Pics here: Practice day on June 7 set 1, set 2; Pre-race dinner on June 7, set 1; June 8 race day, set 1, set 2, set 3

Apr 27, 02 Harvard Business School Graduate School Championships Regatta
Apr 21, 02 Today, I was seat 4 in the MIT Sloan Crew 8-men's boat that raced in the experienced/open Wharton Business School Sprints (1000 meters) in Philly. We took 2nd place, just edging out the Yale School of Management Crew, but behind by about 3 seats to 1st place Wharton. Trailing Yale were Cornell Johnson School of Management and the U.Penn Medical School. The pieces weren't timed, but having hit 2 geese (they don't seem to be as smart as the ones on the Charles) and a crab, and still coming in 2nd isn't shabby, if I may say so. Pics 1, 2.
Apr 17, 02 Today, I was bow seat in the MIT Sloan Crew 8-men's boat that raced and in a surprisingly upset victory over the Harvard Men's Lightweight Crew on a 2000 meter course with a time of 7:17 minutes (which isn't bad for the start of the season). We had an approximate two-boat-length victory.

Dec 29, 01 I picked up a new phone, the cool Samsung SPH-I300 Palm/Phone combo (bought it from eBay for a significant discount even though none of the Sprint stores had it in stock). I love the phone but wish it had a memory expansion slot, but that's minor.

Nov 17, 2001

Rowed in the Foot of the Charles Regatta in a 4-shell, pics here. Having only had 2 days to practice with this team and varying levels of rowing experience, we didn't do too badly for a Head race, results here under MIT Sloan Men's V4. Conditions: COLD. Clear sky, flat water, breeze from the North (headwind on most of race course).

Oct 17, 2001 Is it Rowing or swimming in the Charles ... during my usual 6am morning rowing workout (usually in an 8-shell, but this morning in a 4-shell), wind gusts quickly picked up creating huge waves and white caps. We were between the Museum of Science in Cambridge and the Longfellow Bridge. Seeing that we were quickly taking on water, our Coach knew we wouldn't be able to make it back to the MIT Boathouse so we quickly fought to row to the Union Boat House, not far way, but protected from the waves in a small inlet by a wall of rocks. Unfortunately, the tides were too strong and we were swept right into the rocks and ran aground, whilst the boat continued to take on water until the shell was completely full of water (though still floating). We stepped out of the underwater shell and into the river, climbed on Coach's launch boat, and slowly went to the dock over at UBC, soaking wet, most without shoes, as runners and joggers were passing. We had to leave the shell since the tides were still too strong to pull it away, but the MIT Coaches returned later to retrieve it with help. Pic of the resulting boat shell.

Sep 11, 2001 Oh my God! If I know you, please email or call me and let me know you're okay. I had a flight scheduled to fly to NYC from BOS later in the afternoon -- I am happy to be alive. This is a tragic event, and that's an understatement. I believe we will catch those responsible and they will be made to *pay*. I trust our nation will overcome this tragedy, becoming wiser, stronger, and cohesive in our commitments to freedom. My wishes to you and your loved ones! If you're a Sloan 2000 MBA, please be sure to check in and let us know you're okay. Other MBA's check in here.
